Now used as Blairsville City Hall, it is no surprise that the old jail has bars on it's upstairs windows. Built by the WPA in1935, the building still retains features of its original use. The building is a good example of a WPA* structure, emphasizing functional design and native materials like stone and wood. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. It is located at 33 Blue Ridge Street. * The Works Project Administration (abbreviated WPA), was created in May 1935 by Franklin D. Roosevelt. It provided jobs and income to the unemployed during the Great Depression. |
