BLAIRSVILLE RECEIVES DOT TRANSPORTATION ENHANCEMENT (TE) GRANT

Monday, February 18th was an exciting day for Blairsville and the Downtown Development Authority. Mike Evans, Chairman of the DOT Board, and Representative Charles Jenkins presented us with a $250,000 TE grant! These funds will be used to begin a streetscape project in the downtown area. Our primary goal is to improve pedestrian safety on the square by defining the walkways, crosswalks, parking and traffic lanes. Mr. Evans was happy to fund this grant as he noted the state DOT sees downtown projects as a very important element in the economic structure of a community. We appreciate the importance he placed on "downtowns" and look forward to planning and implementing our streetscape project.

TOUR de GEORGIA

Blairsville will be the official start of Stage 6 of the Tour de Georgia, presented by AT&T, premier cycling race, which has earned a reputation as a major warm up to the renowned Tour de France event. An expected tour of 15 teams of world class cyclists will wind their way through this majestic mountain town as they journey to what has become known as the signature “Queen Climb”- the grueling race to the summit of nearby Brasstown Bald Mountain- the highest peak in Georgia.

On Friday, April 25th, downtown Blairsville will host “The Night Before The Climb”, an event to capture some of the excitement of the next day’s race, featuring outdoor dining, live music from “SUNDOWN“, official Tour merchandise and team autograph sessions. The event will be held from 6:00pm-9:00pm in the Seasons Inn Plaza, across from the historic Union County Courthouse and will be free to the public.
