Saturday
morning was
a planned workday
for many people
in Blairsville,
Georgia.
On May 9th, 2009,
business owners,
families, the
Blairsville Garden
Club, the Downtown
Development Authority,
the Mayor’s
office, the Commissioner’s
office, the Blairsville
Union Chamber
of Commerce, the
Historical Society,
and other volunteers
worked to spruce
up Downtown Blairsville
as part of the
annual Great
American Clean-up.
People
pitched in all
over town. Volunteers were
seen bagging leaves
on Blue Ridge
Street, picking
up trash on Earnest
Street, mulching
the City Hall
perennial beds,
weeding established
green spaces,
digging out old
dirt, adding fresh
potting soil,
and planting flowers
in every available
island, pot, and
barrel.
According
to one volunteer, “This
is a fun and rewarding
event. We work
together then
stand back and
see immediate
results. As the
summer gets underway,
we watch as things
fill in and really
start blooming.
It’s amazing
what gets done
in less than two
hours when all
the different
groups work toward
a common goal.”
